You play against the dealer, not the other players. The aim is a hand closer to 21 than the dealer's without going over. Picture cards count 10, aces count 1 or 11, everything else counts its number. After your first two cards you can hit, stand, double down or split a pair; go past 21 and you lose on the spot.
Unlike slots, blackjack rewards good decisions. Basic strategy gives the best move for every pairing of your hand and the dealer's visible card. Follow it and the house keeps about 0.5% of what you bet; play on instinct and it is usually 2% or worse. The chart takes an evening to learn, and online you can keep it open next to the game.
RNG blackjack is software: it runs around the clock, deals instantly and starts at €0.50 or €1 a hand, which makes it the place to practise. Live blackjack streams a real dealer from a studio, usually Evolution or Pragmatic Live. It is slower, minimums tend to start at €5, and the atmosphere is closer to a casino floor.
With basic strategy and standard rules, blackjack returns about 99.5%, a house edge of roughly 0.5%. Play by gut feeling and the edge usually climbs to 2% or more, which is where most players actually sit.
Not in RNG blackjack: the virtual deck is shuffled before every hand. Live tables deal from a shoe, but they shuffle early and often, so counting rarely pays off. Basic strategy is the edge you can actually use.
In the American game the dealer takes a hidden second card and checks for blackjack straight away, so you never lose a double or split to a dealer blackjack you could not see. In the European game the dealer takes the second card only after you play, and that risk stays with you.
